I don't have any urgent need for this information... Just curious.
You just answered your own question brilliantly.

Re: Newbie question about working on the bottom

I just did exactly what you described, as I hav in years past. Usually I grab a spare jackstand in case the one I'm about to move seems overly removed from the others.

What's new this year is the yard offered me sheets of waxed paper to put between the stand and the wet paint on the hull, said the paint would cure under the waxed paper before launching. I didn't try it, but I wonder if anyone else has.

Re: Newbie question about working on the bottom

Very much depends on the yard, so choose your yard according to your confidence and conditions. In Portugal on my steel boat, I and others, move the stands unassisted all the time. Otherwise you'd get nothing done. In the UK, they were more strict and obliging with fewer straps and stands to mess with. Over time you'll develop methods that work for you and you'll find the tribes whom you prefer to take advice from.

That is not how insurance works. You must file with your own underwriter and they may, at their discretion subrogate.

Re: Newbie question about working on the bottom

Previous owner of Risky B, a circumnavigator and very experienced and competent racer, did his own moving stands for 10 years or so. But then he made a mistake with one he moved and she fell over!

Any way, on the East Coast of Australia I think you would find it hard to find a yard whose agreement allowed an owner to move props.

That's a cradle frame with 4 fixed points, one does not drop a support on those without first rigging a portable prop slightly ahead first of all, and if you want to be really safe you place a timber under the bow as well wedged in.
Like everything, it's simple once you know how.

Exactly what my yard does.

Re: Newbie question about working on the bottom

It's hard to imagine any yard in the U.S. having an insurance policy that would allow non-employees to move a stand.

Re: Newbie question about working on the bottom

Over 20 years of doing my own bottoms around the world, and I have never moved a stand myself. The yards are good about doing it for you, so why take the risk.

I do sand and paint the bottom of the keel after I have been lifted to splash. One time I paid extra to hang in the slings overnight, then grounded in the ICW on the way out to the ocean. The joys of an 8 ft draft.
