Re: Origo Stoves have been discontinued??

From an older thread. Might be an alternative for some:

Project Gaia

Project Gaia promotes clean cookstoves that are powered by alcohol fuels – fuels that are clean, safe, and efficient. The CleanCook stove is powered by alcohol fuels, fuels that virtually eliminate household air pollution and drastically reduce emissions. Cleancook Sweden AB originates from Dometic Group, and works closely with Project Gaia, Inc.

CLEANCOOK AB ➥ Products – Cleancook Sweden AB

and ➥ Clean Cooking Catalog

and ➥ Clean Cooking Catalog

If you do a site search here on Cruisersforum you can also find a thread with thoughts about building a 6000 yourself with cleancook burners.

We will most likely after all stick to Propane after all, I hate it due to the safety issues, but my boyfriend, who is also the cook on board, prefers it.

Re: Origo Stoves have been discontinued??

just want to point out that origo stoves have a large metal area with a lot of surface. This works like a huge heat sink and wastes a lot of energy. There are other alcohol stoves that cost $10 or so (or you can make one fairly easily) that use half the fuel!!

Also the fuel always evaporates out when you aren't using it. This stove is a bad design and it should be discontinued.

a. You don't actually have any math to back that up. I'm guessing you pulled it out of your ear. I've seen the 3rd party efficiency studies.

b. The alcohol only evaporates between uses if you don't use the cap that seals the top when you are done. I have left alcohol in the stoves in excess of 6 months as a test. I bet the stove you used had lost the cap, since you did not mention it. You can find them on eBay.

The Cleancook design has some efficiency improvements and manufacturing cost improvements. Yes, I know of the $10 stoves. Go for it. Not even people in the 3rd world want them for regular cooking.

Re: Origo Stoves have been discontinued??

I regularly cover my tanks with thin high temp silicone sheets after cooking to hold in alcohol, it works well.
Putting the tanks out in the sun to evaporate the water is a good tip, I have brought mine home to put in the oven low heat for a while too. It does seem to help.
I thought I read somewhere that some company is taking over manufacturing the stoves. Did anyone else hear of that? Did I dream it?
After using my stove for the last 5 years or so, I don't see any major advantage to propane now for the simple cooking I do. It may be a little slower, yes, but how much of a hurry are you really in? And going without a tank out in a vented hatch, the solenoid, the tubing, possible leaks, etc, for a small boat, going with an Origo seems like a no-brainer to me.
