Outboard motor lift

Good morning! Hoping to save some time with research and get a few ideas.

I’m looking for an easier way to lift and lower my outboard to my dinghy. Currently, its at least a two person job where we make a harness out of line and one person lowers the motor to the other person in the dink. Not something I would want to put my wife through.

I have seen a few products out there on the market. I would prefer to have to fashion some giant ugly contraption and have holes drilled through my transom, but I will do whatever I need to I guess. It is something I need. If anyone knows of a good product and/or has a system that works for them I would appreciate it. Currently, my 10HP outboard is mounted to the stern rail. I have an open transom so there is not much rail to work with. I’ll post a pic of my transom here shortly, but the rail is fairly similar to the boat in the following advertisement: https://www.swing-lift.com/

Outboard motor lift

I’m very happy with my outboard motor lift from Garhauer Marine. Lots of other cruisers here have reported good experiences with theirs also. Garhauer is known for high quality and reasonable prices.

Got the same thing on my boat. Tied a knot in the line so even if I let it go the motor stops with the mounts about 8" above the water. Climb into the dink and lift it on the transom. One man job.

Re: Outboard motor lift

Another +1 for a Garhauer. We asked for a heavier wall thickness on the arm for more capacity and it was no problem. Would easily fit your small stern rail area and can be stowed so you don't have to see it when not in use.

Had never seen the Swing Lift before and was an interesting concept. Seems like it would be nearly impossible to use off the stern of your boat with the bimini up.

Re: Outboard motor lift

I use a topping lift or main halyard. Don't need all that fancy stuff. Not talking about a 300lb engine, after all.

As far as the attachment to the engine, I posted an attachment we came up with to get around all the straps and ropes. Made hoisting with a halyard very secure.

For you guys that posted that you use Garhauer.....

1. I suppose when not using the dinghy you are able to use the lift to transfer to a separate motor mount on the rail or does it somehow stay securely attached to the lift?

2. I cant tell from the pics. Do you have to drill any holes in the boat for installation or is it all rail mounted?

Thanks

Russel,
1. Just like many including the Swing lift, best to secure it to a mounting bracket. Looks like you have a nice Edson anyway.

2. It's a combo rail and deck mount. A "ball" mount is secured to the deck and a circle bracket is attached to the rail. The lower tube is easily removable (that fits those mounts), but we leave ours in spot.

The lift can also be used for lifting heavy items out of the dink, like batteries, etc, so not just a motor lift.
