Re: Over coating epoxy paint

I should add my surface is NOT dirty, oily or otherwise contaminated.

So I am not sure this product will be a significant help.

Something that would etch, that would be the ticket.

My understanding w/cured epoxy paint one needs to sand/etch the surface to get a better bite, otherwise it wouldn't adhere well.
Yes, I am looking to add a new top coat.

The descriptions are variable.

Here is yet another.

DuraPrep®

I agree, I am looking for something to etch the base epoxy paint.

The Prep 88 looks like a dead end.

Re: Over coating epoxy paint

Are you sure the existing paint is epoxy? I only ask because typically epoxy is used for primers but, at least with 2 part topcoats, they are almost always polyurethane hybrids. I'm not actually aware of any 2 part topcoats.

Re: Over coating epoxy paint

Do you have spots out of view where you can try methods? If so, I would surely try “deglosser” even though it’s meant for softer paints... for which it works really good.

When new paint has fully cured on test spot, use knife to cut tic-tac-toe pattern, put tape over then rip tape off to test adhesion.

Re: Over coating epoxy paint

ok so we painted my mizzen with epoxy paint and it sat in sun for a year without any coating over...
oxidation happens
so we sanded it and applied another coat of white, then stripes where i wanted em but they were placed lower on mast..hahahahaha unique--and added 2 coats of imron claro aka clear coat, same as used on show cars..yup...
and th e automotive painter who painted this on with spray ...yes spray.... made sure the paint was well bonded with the claro for longevity.
ta daa.... perfection.
we sailors can learn a lot from automotive specialties as in restoring and show car building. paint aint just paint.. the marine epoxy paint we applied first doesnot tolerate sun. oopsy. clear coat imron loves sun.
enjoyyoiur conundrum. mine is cured.

We painted MOJO using the Ameron/PPG system of paints. After sanding we applied two coats of Amercoat (Bar Rust) 235 two part epoxy. Top coat was two coats of Amercoat 450HSG (semi gloss). Anywhere we had exposed steel from sanding we first coated with Cathacoat 302H inorganic zinc primer then the 235 then the 450. Came out very nice!

Imron IS NOT an epoxy, it is a polyurethane based paint as are Awlgrip, Awlcraft, Perfection, Alexseal, Quantum 99 and pretty much all of the well known 2 part paints commonly used for boats and most automotive paints as well. I can't think of any epoxy based topcoats actually, although they may exist. As I said earlier the all use epoxy PRIMERS. If anyone knows of one please share.
