Re: Painting under pads and keel blocks

Just ask the yard guys to lift your boat before they go to lunch. Then you paint the bald spots and let it dry for an hour while they're at lunch. Or, if you ask nicely, sometimes they'll lift your boat "last thing in the day" at whatever quitting time is. Then you slap the paint on the bald spots and yes, let it dry overnight while it hangs there, with the launch first thing in the morning.
With a little flexibility, you can pick up adequate drying time. Ask the guys what they can do to help you out on this, they've probably heard the request before and there's something they'll be happy to do. For a tip, of course.

Actually, I didn't really have a question for me. I've been down this road for 30 years and know a number of answers. The original question was to provoke conversation.

The problems are obvious and depend on the boat. First, you only get a single coat, whereas many sailors use two. Second, the drying time will be far below spec. Would you launch your boat 10 minutes after painting, even if it would not stick to the slings? And yes, if you look at boats when they are hauled, the prior pad marks are often obvious. Finally, the size and location of the marks varies; on keel boats they are not too hard to work around, but on centerboard boats they can be huge, because the boat is not resting on true keel blocks.

No, last thing in the day does not work at busy yards. That is a small yard thing.

Perhaps there is a better way. Low profile jacks instead of keel blocks. Just food for thought and something to kick around. And maybe it informed a few people of the hazards of moving stands on their own.

Drying times are not under spec for most modern bottom paints.
