Wow, Thanks everyone for the replies. After considering all your opinions, I agree; removing the bulkhead isn't really worth the risk. I was hoping to redesign the interior for added comfort while cruising the Great Lakes, but it really isn't that big of a deal. I'd rather have a functional and safe sail than a comfortable rickety one!

Well it hasn't snapped yet! Actually I've had it over pretty hard in a fairly steep chop and I was watching for deflection as I did and it so far seems fine. Of course that is not the full displacement of the boat, but I am confident it'll be fine now given all the great info I got in that thread and especially Eigenvector's analysis!

There would be a considerable safety factor built into something like the beam. No less than 4x I would think.
