Perkins Diesel 4-107

Looking at painting the engine, can someone advise how hot the engine exterior can get please?

It appears there's 2 types of spray cans available, one up to 120C (or 248F) and the other to 360C (680F).

Many thanks.

There'd be something terribly wrong if it got over 120°C

"What temperature should a Volvo Penta run at?
The Volvo Penta 2001 was only available with raw water cooling. The thermostat starts to open at 140 degrees F +- 5 degrees and should be fully open at about 160 degrees. So, you shouldn't see any temps higher than 160 F.Nov 16, 2014 (CruisersForum)

It depends on where on he engine you are talking about. Most of the engine and the oil pan are going to stay around your coolant temperature, which you can measure pretty easily. It's not going to be far above 100 Centigrade, because even if your cooling system is presssurized (spring gasket on the cap) it's not going to be very much pressurized, and the stuff you put in your coolant (antifreeze) isn't going to raise the boiling point much.

On the other hand, everything in the exhaust system between the cylinders and the water inject, given a wet exhaust, the exhaust manifold in essence, could be a couple of hundred and need the hot stuff to paint.

But why? Is the 360 degree paint a bunch more expensive?

Every marinised 4 107 and 4 108 I've seen has a water cooled exhaust manifold so I'd be surprised if the temperature got all that hot.

Hi Tim, the pricing for the 2 variants (heat tolerance) was insignificant, but both did not offer the same colors, and the one I really wanted came in the lower heat tolerance specs.

I didn't want to waste time or money buying the desired color, only to find it would simply smoke or burn off the engine.
