Re: Place for batteries

The space under the salon berths is taken by water tanks with little space for other things. Under starboard salon berth was the previous space for starting battery that i am eliminating.

In the bilge there is space for them( i need to measure) but i think its recommendet to keep the batteries above "flood level" ? i dont want to go this way for security reasons.

For the batteries, i would like to avoid the 12v deep cycle (what the previous owner had), the golf batteries are a little bit taller . And no $$$ for other options :x

For 480~ AH of golf batteries only 240ah ~ will be usable. Should last us for few days if every thing fails for X reason and on normal days it should satisfy all our consumption without worrying

I am thinking about placing them in the gallay , under the sink , i will have to make sure that it doesnt leak. it will put weight on starboard side.

Re: Place for batteries

Another option is to move the fuel line, but as many of you told me it won't be the best place because of the weight. For the service of batteries, it should be good, even better then the previous place.

I will be going to the boat this weekend and i will weight all the options( measure everything also)

Re: Place for batteries

They make battery boxes!! If acid gets out of the batteries and out of the box, you have bigger problem than some spilled battery acid.

Re: Place for batteries

Found a solution , i have undone the bottom of the locker and i can trim it and get it 2'' ~ more down so the battery will fit now.

Raising the berth, if that does what you want, may not be too hard.

Re: Place for batteries

I'd be curious to see a photo of how you did it. And you meant batteries plural, right? 2 6V?

Just found this (just for information for others), for my case "Note" gives OK for my first idea of location for batteries( with some modifications):

ABYC Standard E-10.6

Each battery shall not be installed directly above or below a fuel tank, fuel filter, or fitting in a fuel line.
NOTE: This does not prohibit a battery from being installed directly above or below an uninterrupted fuel line; however, if this fuel line is within the twelve (12) inch envelope of the top surface of the battery it shall
be shielded dielectrically as required in ABYC E-10.6.d.

I find its strange that ppl need to pay to read the ABYC Standards

Yes it is very strange.

If their work can't be funded by the government, then should be by an insurance industry association or something.

Raising the funds for such standards bodies by restricting access to their work product is not in the public interest.

Re: Place for batteries

Well, here what it will look like.

I need to make few adjustments :
change the strap clips from plastic to metal to hold that weight,
protect the new plywood from moister ,
make some locking mechanism for the plywood ( now the plywood slips under the lip and then get locked by two pieces of plywood in place that it doesn't slide.)

Batteries are hold down by two straps: one on the top and the other from the side.
Straps are attached to eye straps with two 1/4 bolts going thru the plywood

I finally chose 3 battery 12V 155 AH (golfcart) for total of 465 AH, with lots of access to do maintenance.

Place for batteries

Looks good. Someone will chime in soon with all the relevant ABYC standards which may be important to you.

465AH is a good bucket of electrons for an efficient boat with decent charging. I got by with 210 for a while but found it a bit limiting from time to time.

Did the final placement of batteries affect your trim? Hard to tell from the photo but that install appears to be offset from the centreline? My setup is well off centre to fix some trim issues I had with an overly heavy galley.
