Plastic Seacock. Is it ok?

A friend of mine recently had a seacock for his head replaced. He was asked if he wanted bronze or plastic. He picked plastic, this is what he got.
Looks a bit cheap to me.
Does anyone use something like this?

Re: Plastic Seacock. Is it ok?

That's not a seacock at all, that's just some home Depot plumbing fittings they picked up for a few bucks. Definitely not up to standards and totally unacceptable.

If you want a proper seacock in "plastic" use one of these Marelon ones: https://www.forespar.com/products/bo...hru-hull.shtml

Re: Plastic Seacock. Is it ok?

A real seacock will always have a flange to bolt to the hull or backing plate. A valve that just screws onto the through hull fitting, even if it's "marine grade" bronze, is not a seacock and is not acceptable for use below or near the waterline. The Marelon seacocks shown in Kettlewell's response are very good, nearly as strong as bronze and not subject to corrosion.
I hope they didn't charge much for the mess in the original post, there's maybe $10 worth of parts there.

Very proper plastic from a company down under.

Forespar makes two kinds of seacocks. The only one that passes the ABYC standards are the Series 93 OEM.

Whoever did this has no business working on boats.

With work like that, I'll be if he had asked for bronze he would have gotten cheap saltwater soluble brass instead. "Hey, it's shiny yellow? What else do you want?"

Re: Plastic Seacock. Is it ok?

I've got these... on my swimming pool equipment.

Edit: I'm questioning everything about this installation. The ball valve is PVC. For connections (On irrigation and swimming pool equipment) I've only used PVC Glue, Threaded fittings, and rubber with clamps.
I'm wondering what the black elbow and black glue is.

At this point, I feel that OP may just be trying to scare us with a horrifying Halloween picture.

Re: Plastic Seacock. Is it ok?

I would not use that ball valve on my irrigation much less a boat. They are garbage, handles break off and the valve jams, and that's on well water.

Hope he has a good pump.

Hoohaa, (the OP) you’ve had a boat for many years and you have to ask this question!
At least have the decency to reply on here as to which company installed this.
No, you’re not going to are you, just trolling right!

I hope nobody!!!

The only serious "plastic" options for seacock, as others said, are Marelon and TruDesign
