Plumbing problem: ball on sink leaks

Step 7 there is a ball on a rod (number 2 in diagram). When rod the ball sits on is in down position water leaks out of the ball. How do I get the stupid ball to seal so that it doesn't leak?

This is the mechanism to open and close the drain from the sink. When in up position in pulls drain down and water fills sink. When in down position it pushes drain up and water drains from sink.

This is for a home sink. Boat related in that I need to get this installed to sell my house so I can get to my boat we just bought. If too far non-boat I understand if mods remove or move to other section of forum.

Thanks for the help!
Richard

That is a pop up assembly. Go buy a new all brass one from a plumbing supply house and install it and that should fix it.

I’m guessing the one you are installing came with your Home Depot faucet?

Lowes, but yes you are on right track.

Big box store. It was actually an expensive one not a cheap-o. Very frustrated. Cheap plastic parts in assembly.

Re: Plumbing problem: ball on sink leaks

Fixed it. I hope!

It's working now.

There is a ... plastic shaped piece... inside number 1 in step 7 that is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions. I removed it. Reversed it. Put it back in. Reassembled. Now it doesn't leak.

For now.

How sketchy is that? That should at the least be on the instructions. Especially showing which way it's supposed to go. It doesn't work in the original direction, or maybe I somehow reversed it without realizing it at some random point.

Monitoring it. Put pan under to see if it leaks.

Makes me nervous.

Re: Plumbing problem: ball on sink leaks

Richard -

Hoping for the best - I've not found the reversing gasket, but I have overtightened the threaded portion of #1 which holds the ball inside the drain-pipe, thus cracking the plastic threaded portion....which then leaked "from the ball".
I may be envisioning a different, collateral issue than you experienced, but offering this suggestion in case the leak reappears.

Glad to know about the success you've had.

Thanks for sharing,
The Other Richard :-)

Re: Plumbing problem: ball on sink leaks

Lol, thanks Richard.

I didn't over tighten it. And so far it's not leaking.

Thanks,
Richard

edit, P.S. Your envisioning exactly the right thing. It's held in as you mention.

If you fill the sink to the brim, then drain it and it does not leak, I would be assured that you are good to go (and sell your house).

Thanks!

No leaking. Good to go. I must have reversed it at some time is my only guess. Or it came from factory that way.

It makes more sense the other way round though, but that's too difficult to explain.

It was expensive I thought that would equate to not cheap, I was wrong.

I actually know what part you are referring to. I’m happy I am able to help someone here for once. It’s usually me asking the questions.

The side of the washer in (1) that should be against the ball is concave, so I guess the manufacturer thinks it would be intuitive. Also, that washer is usually pretty well stuck inside the nut (1), not likely to fall out on its own.

Re: Plumbing problem: ball on sink leaks

The concave side against ball is what leaks. The flat side stops leak.

It falls out easy.

Cheap plastic.
