Portlight glass replacement

Its time to replace the original glass in my 30 year old bronze port-lights. Some panes have bubbles in the safety glass laminate, others are starting to fog. A couple leak so I need to pull all 10 apart and rebed so I may as well replace the glass while I am at it.

Will I be OK with a standard annealed laminated safety glass or should I get tempered glass option?

It appears that the original glass used was just a standard glass and not tempered. The cost difference is fairly significant so far depending upon the supplier.

Curious to what the community thinks.

Thanks
Chris

Re: Portlight glass replacement

I've observed that laminated glass keeps water out even when damaged. Tempered glass fragments into pea-sized chunks and falls out.

Portlight glass replacement

Mine are laminated, just like car windshields, reasoning is of course it will stay in one piece if impacted.
Tempered is for things like shower doors, so it will bust into a million small pieces and not cut you.
I think tempered may be more expensive as I think it has to be cut first, then sent off to be tempered? Unless they have an oven
