Precision Sails loft

I’d like to hear about experiences with this loft. Web site doesn’t show where they are physically. Pricing and options seem attractive.

I am replacing sails on a Rebel 16, one design, class sails. The boat is pure recreational use, too old to race. Expectations are moderate. Whatever, the old sails could be original 1957. They are soft and stretchy.

This is a free boat acquired from a neighbor. We all know about “free” boats.

Testify. The kid brought one home, a Capri 14. Already had to cast a new aluminum masthead for it and there are multiple holes in the hull. Sails are surprisingly pretty good, the rest or the woodwork needs strip-repair-refinish and the mast and rudder cheeks both have welds...

Did they get the Sunfish going? Let me know if you ever need it 'gone'

PS Precision is easy to get a quote and they will normally follow up with an email or phone call, might be the time to ask them about their brick-and-mortar and/or overseas connections.

Re: Precision Sails loft

Sunfish, Rebel, Tornado, Camper, the fleet.

Sunfish is operational. Family launched it before a new paint job but the bottom was repaired last fall. Bare epoxy-glass bottom

Rebel needs some attention to the halyards and mast blocks. Hull is acceptable for now. Sails are very old and stretchy like old panties. Sails well enough to be encouraging.

Tornado experienced deck delamination last season. That’s repaired and painted. Hulls are patched and getting painted. I discovered Rustoleum water based epoxy paint in federal safety yellow. Easy to apply. OK finish for an old boat. A bit pebbly hand applied. Spray would be better.

Roxy, the Camper & Nicholson58 is undergoing a lot in Trinidad. Repaint the decks and non-skid, all new varnish cabin floors and on deck wood. Three years of COVID deferred repairs.

Re: Precision Sails loft

I got a sail made by Precision and have been very pleased with it. They engaged in a thorough back and forth discussion and came up with a more modern design based on measurements of my old mainsail. They did screw up and provide the wrong clew slug, but agreed to pay for a local shop to swap out slugs. Sail is well made, sturdy, and has great shape. Can't beat the price.

Re: Precision Sails loft

I decided to patronize our local Quantum sail loft in Traverse City. Nice guys, fair pricing and responsive when I need repairs on my small boats.

New class sails. The Rebel sails well. Many rigging changes going from captive foot to loose foot main. Added a traveler bridle. Weather helm is gone and pointing much higher. Speed is impressive for a heavy 16 foot mono.

Sunfish with updated rudder system and new bottom - Rustoleum epoxy diluted and rolled on. Airless would be better.

New to us varnish last season on Roxy’s toe rail is gloss Man of War. The photo is near the bow after seven months in the Caribbean sun. WOW

Tornado repairs went well and I built a new shore station for it. One hull needed extensive re-decking from balsacore delamination. One 3-month season on a mooring with wake boats. We bumped 25 knots a few days ago. Currently teaching my 17 year old grandson to rig and sail it. He is a natural on on all of the small boats.
