prepping boat for mast removal

I am moving a boat soon and will be doing all the prop myself. Should I pull all of the lines from the mast (using messenger lines)? Is there any reason to do this other inspection and cleaning.

Or do must people just coil the lines up.

Thanks

Foster

Re: prepping boat for mast removal

Foster, there's really not enough information here to know what to say to you. Moving- across the yard, across the country? Speed - 5 mph, 75 mph? Size/type of boat?

While you've got the mast down is certainly the time to make a general inspection of all the parts you usually don't see, and that includes both halyards and the pulleys they run through.

I you are travelling at road speeds, that is the time to very securing tie everything down - trailing a halyard on the Interstate is embarrassing if not dangerous.

So, what's up? What do you need to know?

42' sloop rigged sailboat. Moving from Florida to Middle Ga. So yes 75MPH, not across the yard. I am just looking for best practice. Remove halyards and topping lift or not.

My recommendation is that you remove them, wash them, inspect them, and if good reverse them to even out wear. Bag them and put them in your trunk for safe transport.

Will you still be on the coast? She doesn't sound like a lake boat.

Good luck with it.

Re: prepping boat for mast removal

It's a short trip, I wold probably leave any of the lines that run internal. Secure them well and maybe bag/cover the coils. That sounds like a lot more work than just sailing the boat from FL to Georgia? Is the boat going to an inland site?

Re: prepping boat for mast removal

Yes it is moving inland. I agree sailing it would be a much better idea to coastal Ga. I wish that was the situation. The lake is definitely a temporary means to an end.

Thanks
