price for masts

Hi

I'm looking to get a price estimate for masts:
1x 27m
1x 16m

What kind of budget do I need to set aside for:
- the masts
- rigging hardware
- installation of masts & rigging

and is there a way to find second hand masts eventually?

thx

Re: price for masts

a single mast tube is one thing, but all the accessories are another thing : countless parts, fittings, pulleys, supports, ...

Re: price for masts

With the number of abandoned boats / hurricane damaged boats and the like I would seriously consider trying to find a used one. I had a new mast priced out, with all rigging, for a Tayana 37 and the cost came to $22k.

I could get a used one that needed one foot cut off, some welding and a few parts fabricated (goose neck, masthead) and the total cost would be less than 12k. This includes a new paint job done properly with Alexseal paint.

I would ask why you think you need a new mast? If moving from a wood mast then, yeah... I get it. But most Aluminum masts can be salvaged / fixed.

Why are you looking? It would help to better understand.

Re: price for masts

serves me right for not reading... Just saw you asked about used masts...

They are everywhere. The boat yard I am in now has them laying around all over the place. Just talk to the owner and he will highlight 5-10 at any time he can sell from boats that were recycled or destroyed. At least in the yards I have seen.

I would go new if I was a racer and needed carbon fiber and the latest greatest of everything. For a cruising boat? No way. Used is the way to go in my opinion.

Re: price for masts

Keep in mind you should have a rigger or naval architect run the numbers on the mast section to make sure it will stand up to whatever you need it to.
Righting moment etc need to be factored for.
Also keep in mind spreader lengths, spreader angles, number of spreaders, shroud attachment locations, shroud pin sizes, keel vs deck stepped design, you'll need a step, a boom gooseneck that will work, and more...

Re: price for masts

27m is about 88 feet. That's a tall mast to find at secondhand! But to buy new, and kit out with all the necessary, will be several tens of thousands.
What's the boat? Do you have engineering specs for the masts?
