PRM 160 gearbox rebuilding?

My old Ford engine has been heavily serviced (new water and oil heat exchangers, new exhaust riser, new Volvo seal etc).
The engineer that should have changed the gearbox orings (heavy oil leak) found a play in the out axle and said that the gearbox needs a rebuild.
Do you think that a 30 yrs old hydraulic gearbox can be rebuilt in a cost effective way, or a replacement with a new one is in any case preferable?
Anyone has experience?

There's a video on how to shim "end float" in a PRM160 gearbox. Did you view that?
