Re: Profurl bearings and seals

You can buy the April edition of good old boat for a few bucks online, well worth it if you need to do this work
I have done just that and will attempt the job soon

Re: Profurl bearings and seals

In the midst of rebuilding my ProFurl B35S.

To second, yes rebuild kits are indeed available. I ordered mine from Sailing Services in FL. Kit includes all parts and then some. For example some older units apparently had 2 sets of bearings so 2 are included though for most you only need 1. No instructions though, but the hardware stack up is no more complicated than a trailer axle.

The difficulty is dealing with the large diameter parts (snap rings, bearings, seals). For the snap rings you need good heavy snap ring pliers (x2...1 for each orientation....inside and outside type). The smaller snap ring pliers (usually with exchangeable bits and reversable direction) just are not up to the job.

Also downloaded GOB article...looks good, but yet to read it. Note one link to buy back issues appears broken. I used the one on the menu to the right of the page to buy.

Here is a nice cut away pic I found that might help
I have ordered my new bearings, bought the good old boat mag, and are about to do my bearings that are now shot, over 20 years old
Am thinking I can leave the headsail on the foil, and just drop the furler off the bottom of the stay, then reattach the stay until it is repaired.
Thoughts on this anyone?

Re: Profurl bearings and seals

Careful pressing the bearings back in...they are large diameter and getting them pressed true to both inside and outside pieces is tricky.

The machine shop that tried to press the bearings back into my swivel got it wrong...now its a nautical paper weight...and I will be buying a new roller furling after all. 😢
