Proper gland positioning

Drilling a hole in the topsides to pass a few antenna wires through a water tight “gland” with rubber surrounds, like this (below). The antenna will be mounted on the stern pushpit.

Is it better to mount on top of the deck (red) or on the transom (blue)?

This is one of those “one-way doors” and my first time drilling this brand new yacht, so don’t want to bungle it!

Re: Proper gland positioning

The transom position is SLIGHTLY less likely to leak, but honestly, if done right both work fine. I'd go with the easiest and most esthetically pleasing location.

Re: Proper gland positioning

The blue circle will result in a tighter 90-degree bend of the coax, which it doesn't like. Tight bends in coax raise vswr.

If you want some more work, you can remove the pushpit, drill where it mounts to the deck, and run the coax inside. Then you would also need to cut a hole in the pushpit for it to exit.

Mine are mounted "red circle". No leaks or issues.

I thought about this and would prefer it, however upon inspection the pushpit mounts from underneath, and secured with solid (standard) bolts. There is another attachment on the other side of the pushpit that IS hollow, however the mounting is threaded on the outside and secures with a nut. So it seems to be completely different and not easily changeable. Unless you know a way.
