Question regarding rebedding Catalina 27 stanchions

Hi,
It is is time for my stanchion bases to be reseated. They seem to be in pretty OK condition, although some are leaking a bit.

I am leaning towards using butyl tape around the bolts - although some people seem to think 3M 4000 is a better option but I am still open to suggestions.

My main question though is, should I change out the current backing bars for the larger stanchion backing plates available from Catalina direct?

It would require much more work (Which is fine) some cosmetic compromises due to having to cut through the "lip" of the whatever material is between the two sides of the bolts on the inside.

Here is what I mean:

Thanks for any thoughts you might have

Re: Question regarding rebedding Catalina 27 stanchions

Hi, Darrow,
When you talk about cutting through the lip, do you mean so that you can use a plate with 4 holes instead of two bars with two holes each? If so, I would not cut through that lip. I would lean towards adding a spacer on the side with the shorter bolts instead.

As for butyl, that is what I use, but beware you can get some really poor quality stuff. I recommend Bed-It Tape. https://marinehowto.com/bed-it-tape/

Re: Question regarding rebedding Catalina 27 stanchions

Thanks JoeRobertJr , yes replacing the two bars with one 4 hole plate.

The lip is more of a ridge that is higher than both sides, tough to tell from that pic. Its probably at least 1/2" high off the finished side (bottom of pic), and maybe 3/4" on the low side. I have seen someone who have cut out a channel in the ridge then building up the low side with fibreglass so it is even. It looked to be quite a messy process and not sure if its worth the effort
