Raw water hose replacement - any brand / type recommendations

In conjunction with mounting a raw water transmission cooler will be replacing all my raw water hoses (one looks suspect, the rest are of unknown age and I like sleeping well at night!).

I have looked through the forum and read Gord's very helpful repost of the Nigel Calder info, just trying to find out if I should be looking for any specific hose by name brand / type / style?

I know I want (need?) wire reinforced hose for the run, will use bronze T to go to the transmission cooler, but is there anything else I need to specifically ask for? Seems you often go into a shop and get great advice, but other times they'll just say "this hose is fine" when it turns out it definitely isn't.

Any tips appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm in the process of replacing fresh water plumbing........... twice, because the hose kept kinking. I'm now attaching an outer hose on the turns. Make sure you test the hose for this before you walk out of the shop.

Look on the West Marine or Defender websites for hoses. They have guides for use and descriptions of all different types of hoses.

So just trying to follow the curves the original hose followed your new hose would kink? That sounds really irritating, to say the least!

Are you using standard automotive hose since this is the fresh water system, or did you find something you (think) like better?

Last time I got some 5/8 wire reinforced hose it was priced by the inch, Defender shows it at $7.00 a foot.
Wire reinforced is used so it won't collapse under suction and is more resistant to kinking in bends.
Most people are using pex for domestic freshwater lines.

You have to use hose designed for below water line use,IE bilge pump hose meets this need ! Regular heater hose is only reinforced with cloth, so it would kink, and is not suitable for below waterline use, although it would work !

Re: Raw water hose replacement - any brand / type recommendations

The only caution I would have is watch that the hose fits the brass/bronze fittings tightly. It seems that many fittings are very slippery loose inside the hose of the same designated size. I have double clamped some of these and was amazed when later I pulled one right off the fitting! That could sink your boat.
Green stripe and other wire reinforced hose is good, but clamping to get them tight is tough some times.

Double clamping is mandatory below waterline .

Pipe hoses must be of the approved type, but price may range 1:2,5 depending on quality, protection, transpiration (sewage). A good chandler should offer alternatives, and be informative.

For the raw water hose I used this
https://www.asap-supplies.com/hose/w...ke-hose-412632

An advanatge of being a clear hose is you can see any air getting into the hose.

Look for multi layer, wire reinforced silicone, rubber or epdm hoses. They will be rated for vacuum, pressure and temp.

Clear hose will never meet the multi layer requirement. Also be wary of anything from a non first world country. Most is crap.

Some of the automotive and motorsport stuff also fails to meet the proven specs.

There are numerous marine brands. I always baseline against proven brands that supply defence. Like Gates. You can use their specs to sort through the marketing bs. You can also use the old milspecs for reference.

http://www.gates.com/products/indust...al-hose/marine

You also need to multi clamp. Look for all stainless unstamped hose clamps like awab. Avoid anything else.

Watch for non bronze fittings. Lots of brass and sreel fittings out there.
