Re-paint Hull

Currently assessing the purchase of a used 50' Beneteau sloop from 1999. The hull has been re-painted in 2011 and, after enquiry, has been described as-

"the original blue gelcoat was out of age as most of the coloured gelcoat. The gelcoat has been sanded + 1 coat epoxy primer + 3 coats Megagloss airless paint"
I understand the work has been carried out professionally in Portugal at a cost of approx €12k+ (probably included some other works).

Would appreciate any advice/comments on the medium/long term suitability of the application described.

many thanks

Re: Re-paint Hull

I had never heard of the stuff before so I looked it up on the internet...

According to several reviews it is not holding up to the sun in the southern USA and fades rather rapidly. One guy compared it to sspraying you boat with Rustolium... I would do you own research for sure, otherwise you may end up having to invest $20,000 (Or more) in a new paint job very soon

As far as why they painted the boat... Adding color to gelcoats during manufacturing is not a good idea. The colors fade rapidly and require extra special care to keep them from fading. Usually after five years the gel coat colors are badly faded and nothing will bring them back.

Re: Re-paint Hull

One need look no further than any car park to see how unpopular colors are compared with white. The longevity of this specific paint will be difficult to quantify given it's limited use and the human nature characteristics which prompts people to complain more than laud a product.
