Recommendations for Morse cable tight radius

I'm replacing my Morse cables.....again.

This time I have cut away some obstacles to allow a better radius but I am still left with about 100mm.

The ones I am replacing were "Premium" cables meant for tight corners but they didn't like it and bent at the swaged fitting after a year and a half.

Any recommendations.

Thanks.

Re: Recommendations for Morse cable tight radius

According to recommendations I've read the minimum radius should be 125mm to 150mm

Re: Recommendations for Morse cable tight radius

Unfortunately I can't get around it without cutting up the boat, it's actually just under 100mm so I know I'm pushing my luck.

I found these Seastar ones at 100mm they are 4x the price ! I'd pay it if I knew I'd get 4x the life.

You may need 2 cables with a bell crank in between

Teleflex Morse standard cables use stainless steel Lubri-Core™ core wire for smooth operation and long life. (8” minimum bend radius.)
Premium “TFXTREME” cables have a heavy jacket and the splined, coated core element for maximum smoothness with minimal lost motion. (4” min. bend radius = 100mm).

Re: Recommendations for Morse cable tight radius

wguinon said it: "Use a bell crank" to go a round the corner. It is not difficult to make a bell crank and a suitable mount for it. When Morse cables have straight runs, there is very little friction in them and they last forever. The downside to this solution, of course, is that you will need to buy two new Morse cables of appropriate length, but if you have to buy a replacement one for your existing set-up, the additional cost should be trivial.

Re: Recommendations for Morse cable tight radius

Thanks all.

The bell crank wasn't going to fit nicely so I ended up getting custom cables made, guaranteed for 2" radius. A horrible price, but he assures me that's job done for 10 or more years.

Thanks

The bottom ones are the ones I had, with the blue outer sheath, they kinked at the first crimp. Thanks for the info, it's why I decided on cables with a tighter radius, (hopefully) better ones.

Re: Recommendations for Morse cable tight radius

I fitted them on the weekend, in the rain, what a prick of a job. Anyway turned out ok, fixed some messy wiring and fuel lines along the way so ended Ok and it looks a lot neater in the outboard well.

The pressure on the Morse control is still a little tight, which is disappointing, I was hoping for light hand control. It works nicely on the pull stroke but a bit stiffer on the push (reverse). Throttle feels great in both directions. Hopefully will get my 10 years out of them.
