Re: Refitting a Compass 47

After much weather related delays we finally got the gel coat on. As much as I wanted to spray ( Thanks to Minaret's advice), the marina I am in would not be too impressed. Especially considering that I am surrounded by 70+ foot yachts, with paid crews. We did not roll it on. We ended up brushing it on and I think it went on a bit better. We managed 5 coats on the areas we prepped.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Here are some more pictures. We ended up chilling the gel coat, MEK, and patch booster to give us more working time. I think we went through about a gallon and a quart worth of gelcoat. We are both super sun burnt and tired as well. Denise seems to be a natural at brushing this stuff. The smoothest areas are the ones done by her.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

More pictures. In the last one the boat looks so weird with no stanchions and deck hardware. I guess next weekend will be very dusty for us.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The Gelcoat is done (minus the polishing and waxing), the boat is primed and today we managed to apply Kiwigrip on about half of the nonskid. We plan on getting the rest on tomorrow.

Ready for primer:

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The Kiwigrip does not like the sun or the higher temperature, so we worked until about 1:00PM:

Looks like a beautiful job, and a remarkable transformation of an older boat!

Been enjoying this thread -- thank you.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Next on the agenda is compound/polish/wax, reinstall the deck hardware with butyl tape, reinstall interior that was removed to access the hardware. Then we will move on into the cockpit and start all over again!

We finished all of the heavy sanding. We started with 320 and finished at 1000. Looking at what we have so far I want to sand both sides of the cabin top again with a guide coat and some better sanding boards. So, it's funny you asked me about the guide coat, I was going to go on your amazing refit thread and ask you the same question.

The last time I used a guide coat was in 1993 when I helped the paint guy fair the hull of our sailboat. I remember a dye and an acetone type concoction that I applied with a rag. Most everything I read on the internet suggests using spray paint
, which I don't want to use. Too many mega yachts around me.
