Reinstalling Anchor Roller Assembly

It was a windy day in the anchorage with 25kt steady and gusting higher. I was safely anchored with both anchors down and comfortably reading below. The crash shook my 42’ boat. I dashed up on deck to discover that I had inherited a motor yacht two to three times the size of my boat, firmly pinned to my windward beam. Anchoring and driving a boat were not the other captain’s fortes. They had dragged and slammed into my bow.

My major damage was a bent bow roller. I was able to remove the six bolts and have a stainless shop in Fort Lauderdale unbend and re-weld it.

What I am wondering is what caulk, sealant, if anything, I should use between the stainless assembly and the aluminum toe rails on which it mounts. The original only had some white goop on the bolts (plumber’s putty?).

Any input would be appreciated.

Ummm... butyl tape is a great sealant, but in this application I fear that it would eventually (maybe quickly) squeeze out, allowing contact between aluminium and stainless, and we all know what that leads to.

I would use one of the polyurethane sealants, assemble without tightening bolts until the sealant has cured, and then tighten to working torque. This should make a solid assembly with decent leak avoidance and corrosion prevention.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Rather than playing with sealants being squeezed out, what about a rubber gasket? I picked up some material at NAPA about the thickness of a coin. This is how I am planning to go, plus plumber’s putty on the bolts, unless someone can see a down side.

To actually isolate the SS from the Al, your plan of a cut gasket is fine. Plumber's putty is not the best choice for the bolts. A proper sealant is the right choice there. You need to be sure there are no gaps or spaces where salt can accumulate and bridge the gap.

The exact choice would depend on the mechanical configuration and what exactly you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to waterproof them to prevent leaks? or just prevent galvanic issues? or both?

The bolts have a flat, conical head that seats into the stainless. The bolt passes through the aluminum toe rail and is capped with a SS washer and lock nut.

The original lasted thirty years with no visible corrosion. There was a white sticky paste on the bolts and washers. I could not tell if there was a coating or just thirty years of dirt between the stainless and the aluminum rails, but no corrosion.
