Removing spokes from wooden ship's wheel?

I'm trying to rebuild the 6-spoke teak wheel of Beausoleil. I've managed to remove the outer ring, but only one spoke could be removed easily.

I'm thinking that a miniature screw jack inserted in the hub could press them out without damage. Any recommendations? The smallest I've seen has a 2-1/4" to 3-3/8" range. The distance between the spoke butts inside the hub is about 1-5/8". Any ideas?

Re: Removing spokes from wooden ship's wheel?

You could use an appropriately-sized length of threaded rod and a coupling nut, but my question would be, 'if they're that firmly attached why would you want to disassemble them?'

I ended up using a simple nut & bolt and a thick delrin sleeve to force them out.

Where they're "firmly attached" is in the fellow (just learned that via Wikipedia). At the central hub, the butts of the spokes are fairly loose and make the wheel wobble a bit too much for my liking.

The big thing for me is to fill in the grain with teak-based sanding sealer to give it a smooth base for a few coats of Bristol Finish.
