You are right. Isailed to Australia from Buffalo,NY and would never go anywhere with Marine Tex on board. A ding that small, who would see it anyway. Repair it and put a decal of a fish over it.

just buy the liquid stuff and "borrow" a spraybottle from your wife.

In your case PVA is just there to create a barrier between the gelcoat and the air so the gelcoat cures fully without being tacky. You can also brush it on once the gelcoat has set after a few minutes.

Gelcoat, then sand, wet sand flush.

Squeegee a piece of clear packaging tape over the applied gelcoat in the ding. It will seal it, and with luck eliminate some of the sanding and buffing. Also when your mixing and matching your mix to the hull color, make sure you clean the area well that you are using to match, or when you sand and buff, the surrounding area will come back to the original color and the repair won't match.

There are all kinds of instructables on gelcoat repair.
Or as said, get a decal. There was a truck at the marina that had bullet holes in the tailgate. One day I walked by it close, and discovered they were decals over dings. I'd like to find some of those for repair work

Thanks for that advice. The only bottles of PVA I can find are 32oz. ans $20+ bucks. If the purpose is to keep the air out, I'll opt for the simpler, less expensive approach.

I just bought PVA for a couple bucks, then go to your local auto paint or hardware store and pick up a Preval sprayer to spray the PVA. Or just dap it on with a paper towel.
