Replacing cap rail ballpark cost

One of the old boats we are looking at is in need of new cap rail where the teak has gone bad. I only know from what i have been told, read and watched on youtube that this can be a real big pain in the butt job. I have seen long lengths of teak pulled from a steam box only to be broken while trying to bend etc. So I wonder. Go with aluminum? If I even bought the boat what could this cost? 300? 3000? 15k? I know the aluminum would never look as good as teak however would it be cheaper to have bent to shape?
Looking for opinions.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Replacing cap rail ballpark cost

Teak doesn't like to bend real well. On Vigah it is obvious they cut the radical curves. But then my cap rail is at least 4 in wide and 2 high. I have had my cap rail off for re-bedding. It in itself was a job.

What kind of boat is this on?

It is on a Endeavour 35 that we are considering.

"teak has gone bad" what do you mean and do you have pictures... teak doesnot actually go bad...it turns grey with no effort. that fixes with a lil sea water and elbow grease. then a nice oil. or, as many "modern yotties" do, sanding then varnishing.
you may want to bring a surveyor with you to look at boats... some of em know what they are doing...

Mine is in the process of going bad.
I plan on when I get to the Caribbean to have to sanded, a couple cost of varnish, then painted.
I’ve been told labor rates in Turks and Caicos aren’t bad?

Re: Replacing cap rail ballpark cost

What Zee said.. i'm not sure how a teak caprail would "go bad" unless mechanicaly damaged.
as far as cost goes its so hard to say.. depends on the extent of damage.. i.e. how much needs replaced.. and where the boat is i.e. labour and material costs.. one thing I would almost guarantee is that nothing of this sort is going to be made good for anywhere less than 1000 usd...
And even if you can fill in the above blanks the price is so subjective...
Pictures would sure help.

Re: Replacing cap rail ballpark cost

A friend replaced his on a 9 meter boat (30ft). Just shy of 3k EUR. Workmanship charged 35 EUR per hour, wood, delivery, boatyard fees, etc.

One year down the road I see his new caprail about the same visual quality as the old one. Disgusting. He should have VARNISHED.

This price is in Las Palmas boatyard (EU/Canary Islands).

I noticed some Caribbean prices (Martinique, e.g.) about 50% higher, last winter.
