Re: Replacing short Mainsheet traveler - options?

Try looking at what Morgan 33 Out Island uses for mainsail sheeting. No traveler, just double blocks near the docking cleats, each side of the deck, up to the end of the boom with another double block that swivels hanging there. It forms a triangle behind you at the stern from one side of the deck, to boom and the other side of the deck out of the way. Adjusting line is cleated on deck or where most convenient. See if that setup will clear your dodger and other things. Simple and convenient, although not adjustable, it does provide some of the geometry of a traveler that brings the boom automatically close to the centerline. Maybe with an extra line tail hanging loosely at the end of the boom, you could pull winch it in to pull the boom more inboard when close hauling. Cannot remember the name for that type of setup but it would be easy to install, easy to find double blocks and can locate them on deck as required to clear obstructions and be convenient to the helmsman. Re: Replacing short Mainsheet traveler - options?

Before commenting I need some more info.
  1. PRECISELY where does the mainsheet attach to the boom? 3" from end? 1' from end?
  2. A quick google search showed a sister ship that is rigged as a ketch with the same short traveler. Is your boat a sloop or ketch?

See https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/196...st-38-3212137/ for sistership

That's a non traveling traveler. Hardley worth the effort to move the car. Have you thought about moving it forward to just in front of the lockers and extend the track all the way across the cockpit. Would give you another 2' or so of travel both sides which would go a long way to controlling shape on the main. A high section traveler track with a piece of teak under it across the footwell and teak wedges under the cockpit seating section so the track runs flat should be all the support needed.

Re: Replacing short Mainsheet traveler - options?

Snore: the boat is a sloop; the sistership you linked is a yawl. The mainsheet attaches to the very end of the boom. The attached photo isn’t great but it shows the very end of the boom.

Huh—- she may have been converted. Any hoot, as other said, you can modify to mid-boom sheeting, but that has some downsides. First be sure to review how you distribute the load on the boom. It is above my skill set, but I have heard of booms not liking the change. Second, moving to mid boom is IMHO a PiTA for short/singlehanded sailing. My personal boat is a Tartan with the traveler at the helm. Not easy to move around, but great for singlehanding.

But you boat is in good company. Hallberg Rassy boats are built like battleships- the traveler on HRs is a pain to adjust and hardly worth the effort. My suggestion is don’t mess with your traveler. Although the mizzenmast.....

Replacing short Mainsheet traveler - options?

Sounds like the best solution is to do nothing. I could of course install a mizzenmast (I have chainplates and all for converting her to a yawl, that’s how these boats were built originally: hull and most everything in Holland, then finished here in New Rochelle to customers’ specs - that way they could somewhat go around import duties, claiming they were assembled in the US). But maybe I should just go sailing and forget racing.
