Retro fitting a new Windlass

Hi there,

As you can tell from the title I'm fitting a windlass. I'm hoping for a little confirmation before I start drilling things into place.

I have a Bavaria 34 2001. It had no existing setup for a windlass. So i'm fitting a shelf inside the anchor locker to mount the windlass onto. The Windlass is a Lewmar pro series 1000.

Ive attached two photos. The first shows a yellow and red line I've drawn in. The yellow line shows the centre line of the bow roller. The red shows the line that the chain has to take due to the offset chute that runs into the anchor locker.

The second photo shows just the extended red line running all the way to the proposed location of the windlass.

So my question is. Because of the offset chute and angle of the chain (horizontally). I will have to angle the windlass to keep it square to the chain angle ( shown in the photo). Does this seem right? most windlass's I see are square to the line of the boat.

Hope this makes sense.

Wayne

You got it right. The chain needs to exit/enter the windlass squarely, or the gypsy will wear unevenly, not to mention the chain might jump the gypsy entirely.

Re: Retro fitting a new Windlass

Wearing the anchor roller unevenly would seem to be a lot cheaper than buying new gypsies. Not knowing much about windlasses or chain, but would it be possible for the chain to fall off the gypsy and have the the weight of the chain already en route to the chain locker pull it into the offset chute? That would eliminate uneven wear on the roller too, if the windlass was in line with it.
