Roller furler destruction

The astute observer will notice the nice (shredded) new halyard I asked advice about 2 weeks ago.

I had some crew on my Bristol to cross Lake Michigan.

The jib had been repaired and the gentleman I actually bought the boat from attached it the roller furler. His son then hoisted it and… winched into place.

I suspect that the lines had not been cleared and that winching the jib halyard caused some problems. We did end up sailing with the damage without knowing though we were unable to lower the jib, or furl the jib. We manually wrapped it up and were able to proceed.

So today instead of sailing it home today I got it ready for winter and haul out. I am dropping the mast and will at least replace the forestay.

The roller furler seems to be fine except for the bent hardware.
The tube is another story. It’s just split about 5 inches. Can I just trim that away? I noticed some people had what looked like pvc pipe at the top probably to help prevent part of what happened to me.

Thanks for the expertise.
