Rudder bearings

Hi,

I have a 25' sailboat, and I´ll need to change the bearings of the rudder and the rudder tiller.

I´ve thinking about JP3 or Jefa, but the measures I´ve found doesn´t much on the upper bearing ousite diameter.

The upper bearing has be bolted, and with stops. The smallest of Jefa looks to be 109mm OD, but still too wide for my boat.

About the JP3, i´m thinking about the 10.13.03, but I cannot see the outside diameter measure. I´ve written to them, but no answer since one week...

Does anyone know the outside diameter of the 10.13.03 upper bearing of JP3?

Is there any catalogue with measures?

Any advise is more than helpful!

Re: Rudder bearings

When we had problems with our rudderpost squeaking or "hiccuping", we found that the bearing had worn. We fixed it by sliding a sheet of thin high-density plastic into the rudder tube around the rudderpost. The plastic took up the space of the worn bearing and was slippery enough to not need additional lubrication. You may want to see if such a repair would work in your case, instead of having to replace everything with materials and parts that might not fit properly.

Re: Rudder bearings

If you have access to AutoCAD or a viewer you can download the JP3 drawings.

In case you can't, the outer diameter of the entire unit is 99mm. The bolt circle is 84mm, and the through deck portion is 66mm.

Re: Rudder bearings

Hi,

I´m thinking about doing the best/simplest repair....

About the Cad drawings, I can see the drawing, but not the dimensions.

Thanks for the information!!

Re: Rudder bearings

IMHO the bearing loads on a 25 ft boat rudder can't justify anything but a plain bearing.

Re: Rudder bearings

yes, plain bearings should suffice, the JP3 are very good but very expensive ...

From personal experience I can say thay Mylar drafting film works very well for this & is available in a range of thicknesses.

Re: Rudder bearings

Hi!

Most probably I´ll fit plain bearing, as you say.

About the Mylar film, I like the idea, thanks a lot as well!!!
