Rust on Tools

Ahoy, Last summer, my tools were submerged in salt water for about 4 to 5 hours in the plastic box they came in from the store. The tools were stored in the bilge . I doused with fresh water real good, let them sit in a solution of white vinegar and one half cup of bleach. 24 hours later I cleaned all of the tools very well. No rust. I took them out of their plastic case yesterday and there was rust on most but not all tools. I was going to give the tools a good spray with WD-40 last fall but totally forgot. ( now I make lists).
I'm looking for recommendations to soak, clean and add some sort of rust repellent ( for lack of a better word).
Suggestions please. I thank you all for your comments.

Get rid of the WD-40 and buy Boeshield T-9, been using it for years.

Holy Poison Gas Captain A!

NEVER, EVER, EVER, NEVER mix vinegar and bleach! This is something you should have learned at your mother's knee. Weak acid (vinegar) plus sodium hypochlorite (bleach) gives off CHLORINE gas, which will dissolve your lungs and your eyeballs. Think World War One trench warfare!

Not only that, you could have just skipped the whole salt water dunk and corroded your tools to rusty nubs just with either of these corrosive materials.

SERIOUSLY NEVER mix bleach with ANYTHING. People die from this.

This is the stuff that earns Darwin awards!!! Dumb and dumber!

Re: Rust on Tools

Soap and water to get salt water off.
WD-40 is a solvent, it’s not really an oil, it evaporates.
Boeshield is good I like corrosion -X, but really clean and dry and good tools won’t rust, I have some cheap pliers that are beginning to, need to wipe them down with Corrosion-x.

Besides from killing yourself or really damaging your lungs from chlorine gas, chlorine is a very strong oxidizer, meaning if it did anything to tools it would help accelerate the rust.

Re: Rust on Tools

Vinegar was a mistake. I use that along with hydrogen peroxide to promote rust on steel for a unique rust finish. Hit one of the big box stores and look for rust removers, that might help, along with Naval Jelly to remove rust. In my uneducated opinion, the surface finish has been broken, and you will need to apply protection as has been mentioned. You could even try PB Blaster and steel wool to remove rust. Just consider the rust a patina for a salty environment.

Re: Rust on Tools

So, my wife just reminded me that she stopped me from adding bleach. Just white vinegar was used. Thank you all and more opinions please.
