rust prevention coating for iron keel

We have a 2010 Beneteau 40 located on the hard near Baltimore. It has a cast iron keel with some rust spots showing.

I'll sand the rusted areas to bare metal. What coating should I apply to the keel to prevent rust. This is all before applying antifouling paint.

Thanks in advance for helpful advice. And have a lovely season.

Re: rust prevention coating for iron keel

A lot of things workPOR-15 sometime, not much every time. The whole idea is to get something to completely penetrate the surface and block any oxygen from entering.

Getting ALL the rust can be a challenge as it like to form little divots.

My current practice is to use liberal amounts of Phosphoric Acid (Ospho or other rust CONVERTER). It makes it easier to get the rust off, multiple coats as needed.

Then coat with something very thin. I use POR-15 but a penetrating epoxy also works. Thin consistency and thin coats. Then top coat with a light color, so you can see bleed through if the rust comes back.

You can contact Owatrol and ask them, I used their CIP product on mild steel and seems to be holding up well.

I agree with Hpeer--Por 15. Give them a call and they'll give you excellent advice how to repair properly. Good luck.

Re: rust prevention coating for iron keel

Does anyone have any experience of KBS which appears to be the same stuff as POR 15 for use on rusty surfaces It claims to be an australian product but also appears on the net as "proudly made in the USA".

Its a lot cheaper than POR 15.....././

As above, treat with ospho or other steel " neutralizer" then cover with epoxy. I'm a fan of WEST System epoxy so that is what I use. Various additives can be added to provide a thickened non-sag product.
Then cover with bottom paint.
Should be fine after that.
I speak from experience here.
