rusty oil pan

The oil pans on my twin engine boat. Have some rust I need to address. My question is ..
. What is the best coating to use for refinishing? I will have to sand.and.paint in place. I was wondering if a spray bomb undercoating is an option

Re: rusty oil pan

1. Degrease and clean.
2. Sand after degreasing.
3. Degrease again.
4. Paint with Extend or similar coating designed for rusty metals,
or "rusty metal" primer at least.
5. Now you paint. Brush or can, doesn't make any difference. Use a "zinc" paint for extra rust prevention in the future, forget the fancy colors.

Follow the instructions on the paint can.

Re: rusty oil pan

If the pan look very rusty, have a box of diapers or oil absorbing pads,so that if brushing or sanding goes all the way through, you dont end up with 6 quarts of dirty oil in your bilge. Yes! this has been known to happen. Not very often, but being prepared is a good idea. _____Grant.
