Sealing exhaust hole

The previous owner of my boat moved the exhaust from the transom but didn't finish repairing the hole. The exhaust port is still in the hull, with no flapper or barrier of any kind, and hull is fiberglass.

I've been trying to find straightforward advice on safe and stable repair techniques but haven't found anything much. I'm unsure whether to attack this from the interior or exterior, whether to plug (with wood?) and glass it, whether to cover it, or something else.

All tips appreciated!

Re: Sealing exhaust hole

Is it solid fiberglass or cored?

What John said and linked if you are doing it from the inside. In the meantime buy a tapered wood plug, coat it with Life Caulk or 4200, tap it into the though hull if you are going to do any sailing and cut off flush. Could turn into a permanent fix.

Re: Sealing exhaust hole

It's a solid core.

Thank you for the link, and the tip about the plug. Should I tap it in from the outside?

I bought Casey's Illustrated Maintenance Manual but it's stuck in another location for the time being, unfortunately!

Well you couldn't get better advice than that of Don Casey. But seeing you haven't got access to his book at this stage there are a number of video clips on YouTube eg

That's the method I've used to close up 15 thruhulls, with one addition. I fair and apply 3 layers of 1708 biax as an internal patch to unify the patch both inside and out.

Re: Sealing exhaust hole

I'd skip the hassle of all that fiberglass work and exterior paint matching.

Spend 30 minutes installing a through-hull and capping it on the inside.
