Re: Sewing and sewing machines

221's are nice machines, usually referred to as Featherweights.
They are straight stitch only, a bit slow and not particularly powerful.
A sharp needle helps a lot with any machine.
Quilters love Featherweights for piecing the small parts.
They're great for a boat because of the light weight aluminum frame and their small size.
Just don't expect to do anything large or the least bit heavy duty.

Hey Senor,

Do you have any experience with a 301? I need something small and stowable that can handle a mildly heavy duty job. Thanks.

301 would be a great choice.
Not complicated, built like a tank and easy to maintain.

Re: Sewing and sewing machines

I am looking right now on internet at a Singer 20U.
Is it to heavy to have it on board ??
And is it possible to change this kind of machine to a more "boat friendly" configuration changing the motor ??
Thank you

I did an image search for "Singer 20u schematic" and it came back with the front page of the service manual. That thing is a relatively large industrial machine, not portable. Not unless you have the strength of 4 men

So it sort of depends on your boat!
