Skeg repair

Hello, I recently bought a Gulfstar center cockpit MKII 50ft. She was the second to last built, finished in 1980. The backplate to the skeg has 5 bolts and is some soft steel that is severely corroded, one of the bolts flaked off the other day. I am new to boat ownership and not sure the best way to fix this. I have an appointment for a haul out next week. It is being suggested I need to drop the whole skeg to repair the issue. Anyone experience this or have any suggestions?

Re: Skeg repair

Pics would help us to offer up suggestions, & diagnoses. Also if more is known about what materials it's built from, & how it was constructed, again will yield you better feedback & insight.

This is the backing plate, or what's left of it, and where the one bolt flaked off leaving a hole. I don't know what the skeg is made of. I will have better pic of the skeg once out of water. I swam around and could find no cracks around the skeg where it joins hull.

Maybe this helps?
Thanks for any input
