Small crack on rudder and rust on keel

We had our haul-out and the boat-yard came back with a couple of issues that worried us quite a bit: A small crack on the port side of the rudder post and some corrosion at keel bottom, leading edge and trailing edge (our keel is iron). I am attaching some photos for reference.

This is our first haul-out after purchase. We will have the boat yard fix these but wondering how common these are, how worried we should be about them and what other inspections and remediations may be required based on these findings.

Also the crack on the rudder is a mystery to me. We never hit anything major (maybe some small wood pieces at low speeds) never had a grounding etc. Also struggle to envision the type of impact would make a crack like that.

Thoughts welcome.

Re: Small crack on rudder and rust on keel

Any iron keel will rust, don't worry about it. We have two keels so patch paint each year any rust spots then go sailing

The rudder crack is more worrying but I can't work out your photos. Either way, have the yard repair it and then monitor.

Agree with Pete. Looks like standard seasonal wear & tear. Sand & repaint the keel. Maybe open up the cracked paint on the rudder and see if there's anything underneath that needs fixing. Fix if there is. Does not look like a major problem.

If the crack was horizontal you would have something to worry about. Just need the remove a little glass and/or paint to check it does not got down into the rudder stock.
