Solace-Winter Maintenance

Over the next several months I'm going to have a bunch of maintenance. I'm going to keep one thread and post all my questions etc under it. I'm not sure if that is the best way for this forum. Please let me know.

First order of business:

The cockpit drain pipes are kinked and don't drain quickly. They are obviously done by some past PO.

I want to replace them.

1) Any ideas of how to get the bloody things off the fitting? Just a utility knife?

2) As far as the new hoses, angles of the run will result in a goose neck of some sort as far as I can figure. So far I've come up with a short hose run from cockpit to a pvc 45 degree, to a longer run to a pvc 45 to a short hose run to the through hull fitting.

Here is a photo of the two below waterline exit fittings:

Any other ideas?

Re: Solace-Winter Maintenance

OMG that is terrible

So don't mess about hacksaw the pipes off assuming the boat is still out of the water and angle grind the plastic through hulls out because they may not be suitable for underwater use.

You then have a choice, bronze (expensive) corrosion resistant brass DZR or tough plastic, your choice for through hull and seacock. Depending on the hull thickness you ought to have a backing plate and if you are US based then wired to the anode as part of a bonding system. Europeans don't do this and each valve is completely separate.

They are wrongly installed and that is why you get the kink in the hoses.
The starboard cockpit drain goes to the PORT throughhull.
No kinks and water drains correctly when heeled.

I wonder why it didn't originally come with seacocks? They were diligent PO's were dilligent about keeping them everywhere else.

Re: Solace-Winter Maintenance

I can only think it's because they are normally always open even when the boat is left unattended or rain will fill the cockpit and possibly the boat up.

I don't have seacocks, but GRP stand pipes which drain above the waterline so don't need seacocks.

Your photo shows a white through hull. Whilst there are some rated for underwater use made by the likes of Trudesign, there are also lots of others not for use underwater. Since you may not know which has been fitted, best to play safe and replace with a known good quality fitting.

These are not what you want underwater:

Re: Solace-Winter Maintenance

Thank you all for your help. Here's the plan for the cockpit drains.

I'll replace the fitting, both cockpit and through hull with Marelon. I'll use 90 degree through the cockpit and straight at the hull penetrations. I'll work on removing everything in fall and winter. I'll replace in late spring...unfortunately we are already below 40 degrees so can't use sealant.

Re: Solace-Winter Maintenance

Ok. I am working my way through the list of items that must be done while the boat is on the hard. Next item. Propeller shaft and stuffing box.

When I first got it, there was a "singing" sound coming up the shaft at a specific band width of RPM. It was like the resonance you get when running a wet finger around the rim of a glass. Ultimately it disappeared, except under heavy load of people stern wave.

There was also a good bit of water coming out of the stuffing box under power. It was just about one large drop coming out per second. Its dry at standstill.

When I hauled it I found the wear mark shown in the photo below. The shaft moves back and forth into the boat by the distance of that wear mark. There is no side to side play in the cutlass bearing.

When I went inside I found this condition. I'm not sure you can see it clearly, but the red line is pointing to where a wire has broken. I am not entirely certain what the wire is there for, but it appears that the back and forth motion of the shaft sheared it.

I don't know if the cause might be a propeller change. The PO told me he changed the propeller from a 2 blade, with details shown below to a three blade (I couldn't get details of the 3 blade because its mounted.) The motor is a Yanmar 2qm15. It has a Kanzaki transmission showing a 2.14 gear ratio. I know the gear ration has some interplay with propellers but I don't know details. Up to this point I thought I had to simply restuff the stuffing box. But I'm guessing I have something more than that.

Thoughts?
