Re: Someone painted my mast ug!

Blasting does impart the blast media into the surface of the metal. So the correct media must be used. Ditto for sanding.

That concept jogged my memory of a material called Venture Shield that is used as a hood coating on cars. I mostly see it on Mercedes, Ferraris & BMWs. It is a clear poly coating with an adhesive on the back that is used to protect the cars from stone chips. It cleans up pretty easily too. I wonder if that material would be good for protecting masts as well?

I don't know if the Venture Shield would be good or not on a mast. But I'll guarantee that you will need to have a good quality, meaning no corrosion, no flaws paint job on the mast before you apply the Venture Shield. Aluminum suffers badly from crevice corrosion, meaning something is up against the surface of the aluminum and keeps the oxygen away that it needs to oxidize and protect itself. This is why masts corrode so badly underneath a failed paint job. I'm pretty confident the Shield without good paint underneath it would create the same problem

Re: Someone painted my mast ug!

Thanks guys.

You've convinced me I need to do a paint job. Probably use Ameron as that is who I use for the steel. Good service, good reputation.

First I gotta blast and paint the hull. That fun starts in the morning.
