Steering System Identity

Wondering if anyone can assist in identifying (Manufacturer/Model) the Gear and Cable Steering System pulled from a 1969 Cheoy Lee Clipper 36. I could not find any identifying marks or labels on any of the parts.

Many thanks

Re: Steering System Identity

That is the exact same gear I have on Bluestocking. a 1965 Cheoy Lee built Rhodes Reliant.

I understand that it was homemade Cheoy Lee gear.

Zinc Chromate yellow interior and hard-wired binnacle power on starboard side.

If you strip it, make sure you center punch the crown and pinion teeth to get them back in the same relationship.

They "wear-in" for tolerances, and can be difficult to smooth out later.

Excellent feedback -many thanks. I was a bit stumped since one of the previous owners added an Edson pedestal guard (clearly marked as Edson) and when I asked the same question of the Edson folks, they indicated an unknown manufacturer.

I am planning on refurbishing, and likely adding the engine controls to the pedestal. Thank you for your advice on marking the gear marking. This unit has a bit of galvanizing and paint wear. Any other bits of advice?

btw - it was a nightmare unmounting the unit, as the factory had epoxied the teak base to the cockpit sole, and the bolts were epoxied as well.

That looks almost exactly like an Orion system. I recently pulled mine off and replaced it with an Edson CD-i.

Re: Steering System Identity

Thankyou sailinmon

I'll give the Orion systems a look - do you recall the year/model of your old Orion unit? a quick look on the Net would seem to indicate that the Orion Steering System? is now out of business. A couple more questions if I may:

1) Do you have any info on Orion, if they were bought and by who?
2) Do you have any documentation that accompanied your old unit?

Thank you
