Stern Tube Replacement?

The outboard threaded end of my bronze stern tube (~ 1” OD X 12” L) has cracked threads where it screws into the bronze cutlass bearing casting and is leaking so it needs to be replaced. Anyone know of a source in the U.S. for replacement threaded bronze tubing?

Re: Stern Tube Replacement?

Sorry, it is a 47 year old Albert 30 sailboat with a Yanmar Diesel engine. By “outboard” I meant to refer to the end of the shaft tube that sticks out through the outside end of the keel and screws into the cutlass bearing casting.

Stern Tube Replacement?

I ended up having a custom one made up by T Norris in the UK and had it shipped, at the time I was also replacing the stern bearing (the bronze casting that holds the cutless and threads into the stern tube) with a slightly modified one of theirs. FYI the default for them is to make stern tubes out of naval brass, but I went with bronze.

Also I don’t think stern tubes show up on their website, but they make them.

Re: Stern Tube Replacement?

Glad you got it sorted.

Stern tubes are on their website but maybe not yours?

Re: Stern Tube Replacement?

Looks a lot like pipe thread but you need to know for sure. Screw a pipe fitting from the hardware store on to verify, or you can measure the ID and OD and check with a supplier, like Aluminum and Stainless in New Orleans, 504 586 9191. Though they generally have a minimum, for bronze they may have cutoffs or sell in less than random 20s. Or try Farmers Copper, near Houston, (888) 242-9265. If it turns out to be standard pipe, you may be able to find a long nipple and have it cut and threaded at a good hardware store or even H/D or Lowes.

You might also try Fisherman's Net on Downman, Alario Brothers on the Westbank, or Commercial Marine in Chalmette.
