Steve & Linda Dashew--type of cooking range?

I remember reading that Steve and Linda Dashew installed an electric range on one of their more recent boats. If memory serves me correctly they argued that it was not that much power (or the power drain was in short bursts).

Does anyone have any details?

Was this just a normal induction range or did they have something special?

Does anyone here use something similar on their boat?

Is an induction range feasible with a battery powered system?

BTW: I'm not putting one on my twenty-four footer.

Edit: I just found the induction range articles on SetSail, but I would still love to hear personal comments from you.

"We have been testing an “induction” (magnetic) cooktop on Wind Horse. In theory, this takes a fraction of the power of conventional electric units..."

"We’ve been using an induction cook top on Wind Horse the past six months in lieu of our propane stove. Between it and the microwave oven, propane consumption has been minimal, the oven being the only consumer now. So how has this worked out? Great! The electrical consumption is so minimal that we cannot see a difference in our batteries after three to five days sitting compared to when we were using the propane stove."

They said this in 2009. I suspect there have been more advanced in this type of range since then.

Thanks! I figured out the exact name of the range/technology just after I posted.

Well. They have 5200 gallons of diesel on board.....so yeh, single burner induction is no biggie.

Re: Steve & Linda Dashew--type of cooking range?

There are tons of boats using induction cook tops, even production boats are offering them as options from the factory. Sailing Delos on YouTube added one and did a few good videos on it a nearly 2 years ago.

The power draw is based on the wattage of the unit. 1500W on high is typical. So you need a min of a 2000 watt inverter, but probably better with a bit more. 1500 Watt is 125 amps at 12VDC of course... to run a burner on high. So if you want to be able to cook for an hour a day at high (pretty extreme level of cooking) that means you need 125amp.hr of battery capacity for cooking.

While we didn't use an induction stove, we boiled water for coffee, pasta, rice, etc in a 1500W electric 'tea kettle' like the $25 ones on amazon. we have a 2000w inverter and 400 amp.hr of lead acid (200amp.hr usable capacity) and 530W solar and also ran a 12VDC watermaker. Never had issues keeping the batteries charged.
