Swing Keel refurbishing

Hey Everyone,

I've spent an hour searching with no luck so now it's time to post...
I'm doing maintenance on my CS22 swing keel, the boat is new-to-me and the underside needs alittle TLC. There`s a fair bit of play (shown in the attached video) in the keel, likely where the pin goes through. My question is this: is it possible to remove the pin to pull the swing keel out without dropping the entire ballast? I`m assuming I need to remove the bolt holding the pivot pin in place but have no idea how to go about doing that. I can`t seem to find any information on what I`m trying to do anywhere, so any help would be appreciated.

Hello TheWinterSailor,

I am currently looking at a CS 22 with the same issue. What repair did it need if any? Thanks, Dim Sum

Re: Swing Keel refurbishing

Heh', old thread...

Honestly, I've done nothing to tighten the play in the keel, and thats probably a good thing. From everything else I've read if you remove too much play you run the risk of getting it stuck in either the down or up position. I cleaned it up, faired it smooth, and she sails like a dream. Been sailing it that way now since I bought it with no issues.

This has been a fantastic boat, it's a little tender in the wind, but she'll take whatever you throw at her. Be warned though, after sailing it for a few years, you'll start eyeing something bigger...

Thank you for replying TheWinterSailor. I am new to sailing, and I have considered starting with a Siren 17.

Re: Swing Keel refurbishing

This guy made two interesting modifications to reduce swing keel banging, one for while the keel is lowered and one for when raised.
