taking out rudder from Pearson 34-2

I am trying to resurrect an old thread. A member who was once prolific here did a project renovating the steering gear on his Pearson 34-2. He seems to have faded away, which is a shame because he contributed quite a lot. Anyway, I am taking the rudder out of mine. From what I can see, there is nothing holding it in, so it should drop out. It isn't. The quadrant and collar are both off. There is no stuffing box. Has anyone else pulled the rudder out of a 34-2? 36-2 may be similar. Thanks!
