Re: Tee connections when rewiring a boat trailer?

This is not exactly about the wire connections but I attach small CPVC water line to the trailer to run the wires through. I put a T at the back for the wires running across. A bit of RTV can be put in the ends. This protects the wires from abraision. I have connected a number of wires together with any method (solder, crimp, wire nuts) and submerse the whole connection in a dixie cup and cover the connectors with clear epoxy. Have had bilge connections under salt water (wood boat) for years with no corosion.

Some of the manufacturers of crimp terminals specifically recommend against it.

Do you know which ones?

I did a little GOOGLE research (if I'm giving bad advice I want to know) and the only thing I've found is that wires should not be tinned when using screw connectors. Found nothing about not tinning for crimped connectors.

Some Google responses to "should you tin the wire before crimping":

Tinning before crimping (no)

Preparing wires for crimping (mostly no, one yes)

To Crimp or Solder, That is the Question (no)

The above are opinions or guidelines. I did find one standard that specifically mentions tinning before crimping ... answer is no.

I don't think that tinning a wire end before crimping is a huge sin... but there's many reasons covered above that show why it isn't helpful, and could lead to an inferior connection.

If an extra step conveys no benefit, and has the potential to make a worse joint... why do it?
