Re: Thru-Hulls in cored fiberglass. Is core removal and backing required?

Don Casey is a Marine Surveyor and he says:

If the hull is cored, dig out the core around the hole to hollow an area at least as large as the flange of the seacock you are installing. Fill the hollow area with epoxy putty and allow it to fully harden before proceeding. The epoxy provides a solid base for the through-hull and prevents water from reaching the core material.

Don Casey is a Marine Surveyor so who am I to argue?

Re: Thru-Hulls in cored fiberglass. Is core removal and backing required?

Thanks, everyone, for your input and feedback.

I'm hoping that we can find a surveyor who can identify the deficiencies, beyond the visible water leaks, and then create a high-level scope of work. Once I have that, I hope that the surveyor can "supervise" the work.

It's hard as an owner, or it has been for me as a first-time boat owner to bring up quality issues. It feels like this company gets defensive right away... and there's nothing but conflict.

When a job like this is deemed unanimously bad by the community, you might consider naming the yard/person who performed it so the rest of us can steer clear.

I too like to see the bad actors named however, I'd recommend the OP keep that to himself until he has some kind of resolution.

Will share once we have everything figured out.

I am happy that we're likely going to get things fixed, but the all the additional costs are a hard pill to swallow. Also, not being able to get out there and cruise is a bummer too.

Re: Thru-Hulls in cored fiberglass. Is core removal and backing required?

Good evening all. Thank you for the feedback and advice on my little dilemma. Today we decided to hire other companies to fix the problems with the installation of our JetThuster system.

We ended up hiring a surveyor, who did a fantastic job. He went through the isntallation and also took thermal images, looking for water intrusion into the core -- thankfully, there are none.

It's all really unfortunate. We had paid MultiTech Marine Services $56,986.34 for the installation -- we did not haggle them on price. Now we are going to have to spend quite a bit more to get this all fixed.

Going forward, I will always consult with a naval architect before bigger projects and hire a third party surveyor to inspect the work.
