Thruster Controller - a rip off?

Thruster is a 12V Max Power from 2003, with the original buttons on the con. All original and never serviced (sealed unit) apart from possibly motor brush replacement. So I'm really impressed.

As a precaution, I've replaced buttons with new MaxPower 2 button. All working fine.

Question: dealing with their tech.department they say that "in order for the switch to be installed and working properly I need a controller unit - part 315310"

My original install and it's manual had no such unit. So I'm ignoring this advice as the cost is significant. All I can see this unit doing is providing an on/off capability. (Both buttons pressed)

Does anyone.have a conflicting view? BTW this is not a dig at MaxPower techs, I'm a big fan, they're really responsive :-)

Re: Thruster Controller - a rip off?

So when you asked them to explain why the controller was necessary - what did they say?

Re: Thruster Controller - a rip off?

"The [315310] control box is necessary, in order for the control panel to be installed and functional.

Furthermore, the control box offers additional safety features, such as time delay between left and right thrust in order to avoid rapid direction changes. There is no delay when thrusting to same side." Was the answer....

I'm inclined to use as is, with caution.
