tiller tamer

ive come to the realization that my tiller has too much play in it. i cant take my hand off it for even a few seconds. i was looking into tiller tamers and trying to find a good design for my boat. http://www.blumhorst.com/potterpages.../0016/0007.jpg
im on a 27 foot bristol where unlike this vessel here, my tiller comes from the cockpit floor, rather than off the top of the transom. i was wondering if the pullies being that far apart was necessary, or if they would work in a rough 2 foot space. experienced opinions would be appreciated.
