We have 5 or 6 of those at work all in a corner gathering dust.

Including me, there are only about 4 techs in the entire workforce that would even know how to use one of those old school O'Scopes. They are simply rarely needed anymore for troubleshooting.

Only two are even calibrated.

So to save space and weight you can probably take that off your boat.

I find it useful for diagnostics on can bus and debugging interference and electronic module operation. It’s a excellent high precision multimeter too , however I have three multi meters on board anyway.

I just brought out my Rigol 200 MHz scope but not on the boat but nearby !!

Like I said rarely needed.

But if you like your toys onboard that's another thing entirely........

As far as a meter, most any $10 meter will work fine for systems on the boat.

I think I've had the one in the photo for about 10 years. It's my only meter

I had to crimp a 25mm2 alternator wire in a remote harbour in the northern Baltic archipelago last summer. The wire had completely chafed through somehow. I was very glad to have the big hydraulic crimper on board.

That said, once the dust has settled a bit on this refit, maybe we won’t need to carry four IKEA boxes worth of electrical tools and spare parts any longer.

Re: Tools aboard: Minimizing space and weight

While I believe that, in general, crimp connections are the way to go, for maintenance situations where one or a handful of lugs have to be installed, solder-pot lugs with solder slugs and a torch work quite reliably and don't require big, heavy, expensive crimpers.
