Re: Tools that changed your life

Anvil cutter - use for getting clean square cuts on everything from pvc pipe thru hose, electrical cable(up to 2/0!), wire ties ++
Easy and accurate to use one handed, great when reaching thru access ports, cutting old hoses off fittings

Endoscope. I never would have found the crack in my sterntube without it.

Electric scissors if you are doing a lot of fibreglassing!

I see that i have “made do” my entire life. So much so, that with a 25# tool box, i somehow make it home.

Oh and it has a built in flashlight. And movie camera.

Add: compass, a travel aid, tesla meter, a level, a strobe tach, a clock, a personal fitness coach. These all do not require the network!

Re: Tools that changed your life

Electric sanding board and 1,4m fairing bord from Flexisander.
if you renovate your hull or wanna get perfect sanded curves the flexisander is a must. Better then any orbital sander as you can really even out the surface after laminating and fairing.
The fibreglass specialist that fixed my boat indise and superwised me renovating the underwatership told me he could've get a better surface and he bought the flexisander right away.

2nd fleex with a 250mm disc to flatten surface after laminating underwatership. Much faster and because disc is big surface you really get it even quick. But be aware Super dangerous and only for pros as one wrong move and your fingers are gone. I am working since 25years with flex.

- West Marine vacuum oil pump
- Hot knife (for cutting lines)
- Flat toothpicks for wooden screw-hole repair
- Swiss Army knife (e.g Victorinox Outrider)
- BIGANT collapsible plastic milk crate

- Laser range finder for checking distances to neighboring boats on anchor (for initial set and to monitor their slippage)=> unnecessary, can be done with radar, muc beasier, much more precise and 7/24 monitoring
- Impeller puller
- Phone camera to better see something in a tight spot=> cable camera via wifi is much more helpful

These are useful, but...beware of pulling a hole in your hand if it slips!

Re: Tools that changed your life

Solid metal carbide 'burrs'. These do not have carbide teeth, the whole cutter head is made of carbide. I used the 1/4in shaft version that runs on an air tool (mini die grinder) spinning at 15000 rpm. These will cut hardened bolts and nuts as if they were made out of hardwood. I am talking about engine mount bolts that defeated every other method I tried. Very expensive, but astonishingly effective, good in close quarters. Mine were from Harbor Freight; google for other brands. They cost me $50 for four different sizes, (with a coupon). Also great for trimming and shaping steel, including stainless. Cut a slot in a thick chain link in moments. Don't push too hard when using them. Unlike abrasive wheels they throw bigger sharp slivers, use eye protection! Cover any moving parts and bearings.

Artery forceps. (Haemostats). Great for picking things up from tight spots (think dropped nut etc), holding wire when soldering, grabbing mousing line, pulling out fish bones, tiny lock pliers for tiny nuts, oh - and if you happen to sever an artery they are very useful. Except by now they are filthy.
